Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), formerly recognized as System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), lacks a distinct feature labeled "Dynamic collections." Nevertheless, SCCM/MECM is acknowledged for its capability to formulate dynamic collections based on specific criteria.

Dynamic collections within SCCM/MECM enable the establishment of rules or queries for the automatic population of collections with devices or users meeting particular criteria. These criteria may involve attributes from hardware inventory, installed software, or other properties. The membership of the collection is dynamic, ensuring automatic updates as devices or users fulfill or cease to fulfill the defined criteria.

The criteria mentioned pertain to the membership rules for collections based on queries. In these queries, the specified criteria, as mentioned earlier, can be outlined.

Dynamic collections undergo automatic updates during site modifications or when the collection is refreshed. This ensures that the collection consistently mirrors the existing state of the site and resources aligning with the query rules. Dynamic collections prove valuable for the administration of resource groups exhibiting shared characteristics or requirements.

For instance, you can establish a dynamic collection encompassing all Windows 10 devices necessitating an update to the latest version of Microsoft 365 Apps.

To craft a dynamic collection in MECM, adhere to these steps:

  • Navigate to Assets and Compliance, select Device Collections and then Create Device Collection on the Home menu.

  • Provide a name and choose a limiting collection. Select Next.

  • Select Add Rule and choose Query Rule. Provide a Name and select Edit Query Statement. Then select Show Query Language.

  • Enter the query that defines the criteria for the collection members, such as

SELECT * FROM SMS_R_System WHERE OperatingSystemNameandVersion LIKE "%Windows 10%". Select OK twice.

  • Review the summary and select Next. Then select Close.

Adjustments to the collection's refresh schedule, membership rules, and properties can be made as required.
