The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence has unlocked extraordinary creative potential—but it has also unleashed a Pandora’s box of ethical and cybersecurity risks. Recently, attention has turned to Elon Musk’s xAI and its chatbot, Grok. Marketed as an “edgy” and “unfiltered” AI, Grok has become the centre of controversy following reports from Mashable and CNN that reveal a disturbing misuse: the weaponisation of AI to generate non-consensual deepfakes and so-called “undressed” images.


The Rise of Unrestricted AI Deepfake


At the heart of this issue is the release of advanced image-generation models embedded directly into social media ecosystems. Grok, available to Premium users on X (formerly Twitter), launched with far fewer safety guardrails than comparable tools such as ChatGPT (DALL-E) or Google Gemini.

This reduced level of restriction allowed users to quickly circumvent basic safety controls. The result was a surge in hyper-realistic AI-generated images depicting celebrities, public figures, and private individuals in fabricated, explicit, or compromising scenarios. What began as a creative tool rapidly evolved into a mechanism for large-scale misinformation, harassment, and abuse.


“Undressing” AI and the Collapse of Consent


The situation soon escalated beyond misleading imagery into a serious violation of human rights and cybersecurity norms: Non-Consensual Sexual Content (NCSC).

According to CNN, Grok’s image capabilities were exploited to digitally “undress” individuals—using AI to replace clothing with generated anatomy. This is not merely image manipulation; it constitutes a form of digital sexual abuse. The consequences are severe and long-lasting:

  • Reputational Harm: Victims may suffer irreversible damage to their personal and professional lives.

  • Cyber Extortion: AI-generated imagery can be used for sextortion and coercion.

  • Erosion of Trust: In an era where visual evidence can no longer be trusted, deepfakes undermine public confidence, legal integrity, and democratic processes.


Balancing Innovation with Accountability


Following public backlash and increased scrutiny from digital safety advocates, several corrective measures have been introduced:

  • Stronger Guardrails: As reported by Mashable, xAI has scaled back its “unfiltered” stance, implementing tighter prompt controls. Requests involving nudity, “undressing,” or explicit depictions of identifiable individuals are now actively blocked.

  • Platform Enforcement: X has strengthened its moderation policies, suspending accounts involved in creating or distributing non-consensual AI-generated content.

  • AI Watermarking: The industry is moving toward embedding invisible watermarks or metadata into AI-generated images, enabling automated detection and suppression of synthetic media before it spreads widely.

  • Legal Momentum: These incidents have accelerated calls for legislative reform, including proposals such as the DEFIANCE Act, which would empower victims to pursue legal action against creators and distributors of non-consensual AI-generated pornography.
